For most people, summer is considered their favourite season of the year. For others, such as those who work outdoors all day, the summer can be a cause for discomfort. Why? Well, most outdoor workers are exposed to the elements of the sun for a significant amount of time each day. As Deb Group explains, ultraviolet (UV) rays are invisible rays that come from the sun and when they reach the earth’s surface they are strong enough to damage the skin, thus leaving outdoor workers at risk most.
UVA and UVB rays are the main culprits when it comes to sunburns and causes of skin cancer. The Skin Cancer Foundation explains, both UVA and UVB rays penetrate the atmosphere and play an important role in conditions such as premature skin aging, eye damage (including cataracts), and skin cancers. This highlights the importance of proper skin care protection. But how do you know when you or your workers need skin care protection?
The UV Index
The Government of Canada explains, the UV Index is updated on a daily basis to inform the public what the UV levels are and when sun protection measures are required. Sun protection is needed as soon as the UV Index reaches three, not just when the sun is shining, as demonstrated in the graph below:
How to Protect Your Workforce
For maximum protection, it’s best to adopt Sun Protection as part of your company’s Health and Safety Program. As part of Deb Group’s new Deb Stoko Global Product Range, Deb offers a full range of Sun Protect products including individual tubes and 1-liter cartridges for dispensers. Designed specifically for outdoor workers and students, this product offers high-performance protection from the sun's harmful UV-A (aging) & UV-B (burning) rays.
It's never too late or too early to properly equip your workers, and our Swish Account Managers will be happy to help you design a program to protect your workers from the sun.
